18 December 2009 - Announcement - Top Pit Lake 31
Christmas and New Year Period, December 24th 2009 until January 3rd 2010 (both dates inclusive)
After writing to Mr Adrian Davey of Watermark Ltd and following recent talks we are both very happy to allow fishing to take place on the Top Pit during the festive period dates. I ask all who take this opportunity to please act responsibly and note the following:-

Cars must be removed from the park before closure each night, please use the Nature reserve car park (accessed through Waterlands entrance) for overnight parking (members only).
Please do not park on or cause damage to the grass - please park on hard standings/designated car parks.
Members must show their membership cards to obtain a token for the exit barrier.
Day ticket anglers must leave the park by closing time and pay the relevant fee to obtain a token for the exit barrier.

Please note -That from January 4th 2010 the lake will revert back again to "No Fishing on Lake 31 (Top Pit)".

May I take this opportunity to wish both you and your families a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

D J Whittle
AKAC Club Secretary

No fishing allowed on Top Pit (lake 31) until further notice - UPDATE (dated 5 December 2009)
The problems surrounding the fishing at Top Pit were discussed at a special Committee meeting held recently. Unfortunately the situation remains unchanged and AKAC members are NOT allowed to fish this lake. The reasons behind this decision are complex and concern the lease that is being negotiated with the Cotswold Water Park Society (CWPS). The fact that Watermark Ltd has taken over the running of the Cotswold Country Park (formerly the Keynes Country Park), this is for the Top pit (lake 31) and the northern section of Large lake (Lake 32) from the Cotswold Water Park Society, has further complicated the situation. At the moment, following legal advice, the Cotswold Water Park Society are not in a position to complete the lease. The Club are in consultation with their solicitors about the matter and as soon as there is some news, the membership will be informed, via a notice on this website.

Recent developments have changed as quick as they come to the table. We have been informed that the CWPS have taken some legal advice, in light of information from Gloucestershire County Council and do not wish to complete the lease, at least not at this moment, until all matters had been cleared.

Proposals then came to the committee, to consider regarding the Top pit. These came I'm informed from Watermark, via the Cotswold Water Park Society. Since then apparently a threatening remark placed on the Cotswold Carp forum against a representative of Watermark has meant that those proposals were later withdrawn. At present there has been no change on this situation.

The committee have not called for an Extraordinary General Meeting at present, requested by a number of club members as it was hoped to be able to present a full picture of what has been offered to us. Instead there is an additional committee meeting to be held in January, this being ever closer to the AGM in March.

Latest changes are a new member has come onto the committee with an invitation to two others, who have yet to accept.

Many of you will have seen the offer to AKAC members on the Watermark website. This was said to be after an offer to AKAC on the 14 August 2009, which was not accepted. I can only say that at the time a meeting between AKAC, CWPS and Watermark did not produce any minutes of any offer that was to be forwarded to me. The only correspondence received at the time was a letter from Blake Lapthorn dated 31 July 09, (solicitors acting on behalf of Watermark) that stated,
"consequently the agreement/licence so far as it relates to those parts of the lakes where our client is the riparian owner is terminated under clause 8.4.4 forthwith as from midnight on 10 August 2009 ("Termination date") in accordance with the formal notice that accompanies this letter."

Having a press release of an offer displayed at the 'Tackle Den' is not correct protocol for presenting an official offer to the club, which should have been sent addressed to your secretary. Never the less the offer, should you wish to accept it is a personal decision for yourselves only to decide.

AKAC Secretary

7 December 2009 - Do you use the 'Waterlands' entrance? THEN PLEASE ENSURE YOU LOCK THE GATE!!!
On Saturday morning (5 December) the owner of Waterlands Outdoor Pursuits Centre found the gate unlocked and open. This is of great concern and poses a security risk to the site.
All AKAC members using that entrance must ensure the gate is locked at all times when entering and exiting. Do not assume that others following you will do it for you. Make sure the gate is locked, especially when you are entering/exiting the park outside normal opening hours. The combination lock is on your membership card.

ANY MEMBER CAUGHT LEAVING THE GATE UNLOCKED WILL FACE DISCIPLINARY PROCEEDINGS.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Derek Whittle
AKAC Secretary

6 October 2009 - No Fishing allowed on Top Pit (lake 31) until further notice
Owing to administrative problems, the fishing on Top Pit (lake 31) by members of AKAC and day ticket holders is NO LONGER ALLOWED until further notice. This suspension of all angling activities by AKAC members and day ticket holders on this lake is effective immediately. Large Lake (lake (32) and all other AKAC waters are unaffected. The AKAC Committee hope that the problems causing this decision will be resolved as soon as possible. Thank you for your co-operation.

Derek Whittle
AKAC Secretary

1 September 2009 - Did you visit the Thamesmead lakes over the Bank Holiday week-end?
If you were fishing, or perhaps visited, the Thamesmead lakes between last Thursday and Bank holiday Monday (inclusive) you may be able to help the Club. The Secretary and Committee are trying to identify a family group, who were fishing Thamesmead B, near to the toilet, during that period. If you are able to help will you please URGENTLY contact the Club Secretary, Derek Whittle or any of the AKAC Committee members, whose contact details are in the club membership card. Thank you.

14 August 2009 - Fishing For Fun - a day long fishing course for anglers of all levels on 29 August 2009
On 29 August 2009, Swindon Borough Council in conjunction with the Environment Agency, is holding a course for anglers of all levels of expertise. The day long course is being held at Coate Water Country Park between 10.00am and 4.30pm. Complete novices, or anglers returning to the sport, or more experienced anglers, who wish to learn a new technique, are all welcome. There will be 8 angling coaches to supervise, but all participants are recommended to arrive early to ensure a place on the course. Juniors (16 years or under) should attend with a parent, who will be required to sign the appropriate parental consent form.
If you require any further information please contact the Swindon Borough Council Angling Development Officer, Mark Jennings, Tel: 01793 490150

8 July 2009 - Having problems using the combination lock at Thamesmead?
Some members have experienced difficulty in using the combination lock to enter the Thamesmead lakes [NB - the combination can be found on your membership card]. There is a technique for this lock!
It is important to ensure the numbers are lined up correctly with the marker. Unlike a lot of combination locks when you achieve that it does not 'spring open'. You have to 'push ' the clasp part into the lock, as though you are trying to lock it. It will then 'spring open'.
When you are locking the gate. It is necessary to push the clasp part of the lock into the lock, holding it there, whilst you 'move' the numbers.

26 June 2009 - IMPORTANT changes to overnight parking for members fishing Top Pit & Large Lake
With immediate effect, owing to a change in the procedure introduced by Watermark, the gate at the main entrance to the Cotswold Country Park (formerly Keynes Country Park) no longer has an AKAC combination lock and therefore can NOT be used by AKAC members. This means that those members fishing overnight and wishing to enter/exit the Park outside normal opening hours (see note below, concerning Park opening hours) will no longer be able to use this gate for entry/exit, or leave their cars parked within the main Country Park designated car park areas, outside the Park opening hours.
Members wishing to fish either, Large Lake, or Top Pit and enter/exit outside normal Park opening hours, will have to use the 'Nature Reserve' car park at the southern end of Large Lake, which is accessed via the ' Waterlands' entrance, using the combination on your permit. [NB - there is also limited parking on the ' Waterlands' site. Please consult your permit for precise location of parking area]
Any member, who is fishing Top Pit, or Large Lake, during the day and has left their car in one of the designated car parking areas within the main Country Park area, but intends to fish on after the Park has closed to the public, is now required by Watermark, to REMOVE their car from the designated car parking area within the main Country Park BEFORE the Park closes to the public. Failure to remove the vehicle, will result in the member concerned being asked by Watermark staff to vacate the Park or face any repercussions. If the member wishes to continue fishing during the night, the car must be moved and parked overnight in the 'Nature Reserve' car park.
Access to the 'Nature Reserve' car park is via the 'Waterlands entrance' (see below for details).

Full details of the Cotswold Country Park closing times, which vary, depending upon the time of the year, can be found on the Cotswold Country Park website.

This new arrangement does not affect AKAC members fishing Top Pit or Large Lake during the Country Park opening hours. They will still be entitled to free entry/parking and obtain a free 'exit card' from the Country Park shop, on production of their AKAC membership card.

Waterland entrance
AKAC members may enter/exit the Cotswold Country Park via this entrance, using the lock combination printed on their membership card. On entry, turn right and park in the Nature Reserve Car Park, which is the designated parking area. [NB - there is also limited parking on the ' Waterlands' site. Please consult your permit for precise location of parking area].
If the gate is locked when you enter/exit always ensure that you lock the gate behind you. Failure to do so may result in AKAC losing the right to use this entrance.

3 June 2009 - 2009/10 Season permits now available
The membership cards for the 2009/10 season are now available. There has been no increase in charges for 2009/10 and full details can be found on the permits web page.
New members may commence fishing as soon as they have purchased their membership, provided that the water they intend to fish is open for fishing. Full details of lakes open can be found on the Information on Club waters web page.
All members should familiarise themselves with the Club rules BEFORE commencing fishing.
Please be aware that members or day ticket holders fishing the lakes in the Cotswold Country Park (formerly Keynes Country Park) MUST park in the designated parking areas. Parking on the grass/seeded areas, behind some of the swims, is no longer permitted.
Will members note, that the 'low level' bar entrance on Large lake, between 'Waterlands' and the main park is permanently locked for security reasons and can no longer be used by members.
Enjoy your fishing.

10 May 2009 by Toby Parker

27 April 2009 - Any angler fishing AKAC waters MUST be in possession of a valid permit/day ticket BEFORE commencing fishing. Any angler caught fishing WITHOUT a valid permit/day ticket will be in breach of Club regulations and liable to any appropriate action.

27 January 2009 - Re-organisation at Keynes Country Park. All anglers, please read
Owing to re-organsiation at the Keynes Country Park, the Keynes Park shop is closed. The shop is NOT expected to re-open again until the beginning of March, therefore, for the foreseeable future, day tickets to fish AKAC waters will have to be purchased from other local ticket outlets. More info.
[NB - Day tickets are NOT available on the bank and MUST be purchased before fishing commences]
During the period the Keynes Country Park shop is closed, there will be no charge to enter the Keynes Country Park and members will not need to obtain an 'exit' token.
Members fishing the lakes must be aware that for SECURITY reasons, the low level entry bar between 'Waterlands' and the main Park is permanently locked and access between 'Waterlands' and the Park is no longer available to members through this entrance. However, members can still park in the Nature Reserve car park, entering via the 'Waterlands' entrance using the combination on their membership card, or access the Keynes Country Park via the main entrance.

17 January 2009 - Access to Thamesmead and Manorbrook lakes
Please note, the combination lock has been put on the gate leading to the lakes. No angler will be able to gain access to the lakes without entering the correct combination, which can be found on your AKAC membership card. Unfortunately some joy riders have been entering the Thamesmead complex, racing their cars and leaving litter.
It is important that all members fishing the lakes ensure that the gate is kept LOCKED at all times. Members can assist in policing the lakes by reporting any nuisance behaviour to the secretary, Derek Whittle (Tel: 01793 693461), recording details of car numbers, date and time of any incidents.

We don't want to lose this water through the actions of others, so please ensure the access gate is LOCKED at all times and report any incidents to the Secretary. Thank you.

Towards the end of 2007, the Anglers Conservation Association (ACA), the National Association of Fisheries and Angling Consultatives (NAFAC) and the National Federation of Anglers (NFA), with the National Federation of Sea Anglers (NFSA) expressing an interest, agreed to consider the setting up of a unified body for angling. This potential new organisation will represent the interests of ALL anglers and fishery managers in England. The major angling and fisheries organisations believe that, if they are to have the status and influence when dealing with Government, its agencies and other relevant bodies and achieve maximum impact at national and international levels, then they must unite into one single organisation.

The ACA [NB - AKAC is a member of the ACA] is currently looking into the proposal and is going through a consultative period with its members about the new organisation. To date the response from its members has been very supportive.

20 January 2008 - Disruption to car parking at Keynes Country Park

12 August 2007 - The future of fishing at Keynes Country Park
I would like to dispel the rumours circulating, that Ashton Keynes Angling Club (AKAC) is about to lose the fishing rights for the Keynes Country Park lakes 31 & 32. This is simply not true as AKAC is currently in negotiation with the Cotswold Water Park Society (CWPS) to secure a long term lease to control the angling on the lakes 31,32, 34 and 56, covering the Keynes Park lakes (31 & 32) , Cokes Pit (34) and Neighbridge lake (56).
These rumours stem from the fact that the Cotswold Water Park Society is seeking a sub leaseholder to take on the running of the Keynes Country Park site. However this will NOT affect the right of the Ashton Keynes Angling Club to continue to control and allow fishing on the lakes by its members, holiday permit and day ticket holders. In fact all the fish in those waters belong to AKAC.
So please, carry on enjoying the wonderful fishing that we have and pay no attention to the rumours circulating.

Derek J Whittle
AKAC Club Secretary

28 July 2007 - Flood situation at Thamesmead
The entry lane, the gravel track between the river and the Thamesmead 'A' & 'B' lakes, plus the bank between the 'A' & 'B' lakes are all accessible. Both lakes are high and the banks are very soft, so please exercise care and only park your car on firm ground. [NB - Be aware that there is a Met Office severe weather warning for heavy rain in the area between, 1800hrs saturday 28 July until 0900hrs sunday 29 July - flooding may occur]

29 June 2007 - Litter on Club waters
All members are reminded of AKAC General Rule 1 concerning litter:-
No litter to be left on the Club Fisheries, any member fishing a swim with litter or used line present will be expelled.
Recently there have been TWO INCIDENTS at Thamesmead fishery, where the owner of the water has reported litter being left by club members. This is totally unacceptable and could quite easily result in the club losing water because of somebody else's laziness. If you see ANY litter lying about on club waters, please pick it up. Thank you. The bailiffs have been instructed to enforce General rule 1.

ALL CLUB RULES WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.

A member who was caught using barbed hooks, fishing with 4 rods and, leaving his rods unattended whilst still fishing, has been expelled from the club for the remainder of this season and the following FIVE seasons. The FREE PARKING concession for AKAC members, when fishing during the authorised fishing season is NOT affected by this ruling, it only applies to the close season.
